60's Kitchen Looks Like New

LOCATION: Oxford

AGE: Home built in the 60's. Original cabinets.

SQUARE FOOTAGE: 135

WOOD FINISH: Walnut Construction with Cherry colored Finish

TOTAL TIME: 8 hours

Ben and Gene had been considering painting these cabinets, because the cost of replacement was unthinkable and other options were too costly as well. They came to the home show several months ago and Gene was skeptical that Nhance could do what they advertised. After a color consultation with Kendall, they felt more confident. Although they had been dragging their feet until then, they scheduled to have their cabinets done immediately and we were back in their home the next week.

At first glance these cabinets did not seem so bad. If you look closely, you can see some wear and tear in the high use areas, but no serious concerns. When we started cleaning we found out that the cabinets were more worn than they originally appeared.

In the picture above you can see the wear around the edges. Where the drawers were the finish was very worn. Once we got scrubbing we found that the cupboards actually had some stubborn, greasy residue on it and it took three or four scrub-downs to get them ready for the next step. Even with the extra scrubbing, the cleaning was done by lunch time.

Next was the fun part! Ben and Gene had decided to do a color enhancement and we put one coat of color on. It added a warm red tone to the cabinets and it livened things up immediately.
Next were two coats of clear high gloss coatings for strength and luster. The results were beautiful!

As Gene surveyed her newly refinished cabinets, she described how much more open her kitchen felt. She said the warmth of the new color combined with the reflection of the light made it feel much bigger. She never imagined that it would have that affect.

Another kitchen job well done!
